Menstrual reverence is a practice of presence, rest, and ceremony while bleeding. It is a way of being that honors menstruation as an important and sacred time during the womb cycle that deserves space for connection and magic.
Reverence: to regard or treat with deep respect
We all come from a lineage of people who respected menstruation as a holy time when women rest and harness the power of their menstrual blood. To revere our time of menstruation is to reclaim the wise woman ways and awaken the ancestral wisdom we carry within our bones.
What if I told you that you have ability to tap into this ancestral knowing through your menstrual blood?
Nowadays, many cultural forms of menstrual retreating are done with the intention to create seclusion and isolation, cloaking this experience in shame and disgust.
But it was not always this way.
From red tents to moonlodges, people have known the importance of creating sacred space for women to bleed and be. Remnants of these traditions have made their way through years of colonial erasure and we can look to them for reference and inspiration. Yet, for those of us living in the globalized west, we are navigating the on-going development of modernization that is the by-product and continutation of colonization. Our day to day lives look drastically different from these traditional ways of living and so we must create something new. We must dream into how we want to reclaim our menstruation as a sacred time and also envision how we want to create a space like a red tent or moonlodge that is supportive of our current lifestyle.
Menstrual Reverence is an online learning circle and space to welcome those dreams and envision how we can uphold and honor our moontime, while still navigating these modern lifestyles.
Your guide
My name is Madeline and I have been practicing menstrual reverence for 7 years now. In many ways, my womb called me into this path through cycles of pain and intensity during my bleeding time. Although at first I felt forced to slow down, I began to recognize that my womb was actually guiding me into focused presence and offering an invitation to reclaim my bleeds as sacred containers. From there, I learned how to prepare for my menstruation as a devotional practice to set the space and truly drop in to the menstrual portal. I’ve experimented with many different approaches to menstrual reverence and supported others to do the same.
